Description

While visiting Rwanda, our partners from Plot Coffee ventured beyond the country’s most celebrated coffee regions to uncover something unexpected. Working closely with their long-time partners at Ikawa House, they cupped a wide range of coffees—searching not just for excellence, but for undiscovered potential.

One coffee changed everything.

In a blind tasting, a natural lot burst from the table with vibrant notes of strawberry and banana. Unexpectedly, it came from Rwanda’s often overlooked Eastern region—an area rarely associated with standout quality. Grown at around 1500 meters, these coffees defy expectations and reveal a unique, untapped character.

Committed to sourcing only from producers they meet in person, the team quickly connected with Jean Paul Horanimpundu, the producer behind this exceptional lot. The very next morning, they traveled together to Musaza CWS in the Kirehe district to better understand the coffee, its origin, and Jean Paul’s vision for the future.

What they found was more than just a remarkable cup. As an agricultural economist, Jean Paul is focused on long-term impact—working toward organic certification and meaningful change within his community.

This coffee is a reflection of that journey: a discovery from an unexpected place, full of character, potential, and purpose.
